  • Financial Services and FinTech
  • Infrastructure and Transport
  • Resources

Exceptional talent outside these sectors, including entrepreneurship, investment, sports, and creative industries, may still qualify if supported by a government nomination.

Eligibility Criteria

To receive an invitation to apply for the National Innovation Visa, applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Internationally Recognized Achievement

Applicants must have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in their field.

Evidence may include:

  • Senior executive or leadership roles
  • Patents
  • Professional awards
  • International publications
  • Industry memberships
  • Global recognition

Applicants must also remain prominent in their field at the time of application.

2. Ability to Benefit Australia

Applicants must demonstrate they would be an asset to Australia and can contribute through:

  • Social contributions
  • Academic excellence

  • Artistic achievements
  • Sporting achievements

Applicants should also demonstrate their ability to establish themselves successfully in Australia.

3. Nomination Requirement

Applicants must be nominated by:

  • A recognised Australian individual in the same field
  • A recognised Australian organisation in the same field
  • An Australian State Government agency
  • An Australian Territory Government agency
  • An Australian Federal Government agency

This nomination is a mandatory requirement for the visa process.

4. Special Consideration for PhD Graduates

PhD graduates from top global universities or applicants with recent publications in highly ranked journals may also be eligible for consideration.

Step 1: Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)

Applicants begin by submitting an Expression of Interest to the Australian Department of Home Affairs.

This allows candidates to present their achievements, qualifications, and potential contribution.

Only selected candidates will receive an invitation to lodge a formal visa application.

The invitation is based on merit and priority ranking.

Step 3: Submit Visa Application

Once invited, applicants submit the complete visa application with supporting evidence and nomination documentation.

The Department assesses the application under the relevant priority level.

Step 5: Permanent Residency Card

Successful applicants receive Australian permanent residency.

 

Residency Requirements

There are no mandatory residence requirements to maintain the visa during its initial validity period.

However, to maintain long-term permanent residency benefits beyond the initial travel facility period, applicants should maintain meaningful ties to Australia.

Permanent residents are generally expected to spend at least two years in Australia within a five-year period or demonstrate substantial ties to Australia.
